“Nikolaus komm in unser Haus…”

 

On December 6, Germans (mainly kids) celebrate „Nikolaus (St.Nicholas Day)“, a feast day for Bishop Nicholas of Myra. Nicholas of Myra lived during the 4th century in Myra (Demre, today part of Turkey). He is considered to be the patron saint for children and in his honor, Germans have been celebrating this tradition since the Middle Ages. Generally, kids clean their boots/shoes (there are also special red boots called „Nikolausstiefel“) and put them outside on the night of December 5, in the hopes that St.Nicholas will come and secretly fill them with chocolate, fruits, nuts, and sometimes little presents. However, Nicholas only rewards well behaved kids. Parents like to tell their kids „If you don’t behave, Nicholas won’t bring any sweets for you this year“. Depending on the region, the specific family, and some schools, one person (e.g. one of the kid’s dad) will dress up as St.Nicholas and visit the children.

St.Nicholas always wears a red garment and has a long white beard. Some of the kids receive a great deal of praise for being well behaved from St.Nicholas who also brings along his companion, „Knecht Ruprecht (Farmhand/Servant Rupert)“. Knecht Ruprecht beats the children with a stick or shakes his bag of ashes at them in case of bad behaviour. The good kids receive their gifts and thank St.Nicholas. Somtimes they will sing him a song or recite a poem. Typical songs includes: „Nikolaus komm in unser Haus…“ and „Lasst uns froh und munter sein“. Typical food in Germany for Saint Nicholas Day is the so called „Stutenkerl (depending on the region also „Kiepenkerl“, „Weckmann“ and many more), a pastry made from sweet leavened dough in the shape of a man („Kerl“ is the German word for ’lad’).

Von drauß vom Walde komm’ ich her;

Ich muß euch sagen, es weihnachtet sehr!

Allüberall auf den Tannenspitzen

Sah ich goldene Lichtlein blitzen;

Und droben aus dem Himmelstor

Sah mit großen Augen das Christkind hervor,

“Knecht Ruprecht”, rief es, “alter Gesell,

Hebe die Beine und spute dich schnell!

“Hast denn das Säcklein auch bei dir?”

Ich sprach: “Das Säcklein, das ist hier;

Denn Äpfel, Nuß und Mandelkern

Essen fromme Kinder gern.” –

“Hast denn die Rute auch bei dir?”

Ich sprach: “Die Rute, die ist hier;

Doch für die Kinder nur, die schlechten,

Die trifft sie auf den Teil, den rechten.”

Christkindlein sprach: “So ist es recht;

So geh mit Gott, mein treuer Knecht!”
